In brief

Accurate management of the Sludge Volume Index (SVI) is a key challenge to ensure the quality of biological treatment in wastewater treatment plants.

PEPPS automated the monitoring of this critical parameter by combining computer vision, instrumentation, and intelligent data processing, enabling reliable, autonomous, and remotely accessible supervision.

  • Automated SVI measurement for increased accuracy.

  • Reduced manual on-site interventions.

  • Local and remote data access via web interface and cloud.

THE CHALLENGE

Making SVI measurement reliable and automated

Before PEPPS’ intervention, SVI readings were taken manually, resulting in measurements that were often irregular, time-consuming, and poorly representative of actual process variations.

The client wanted to reduce repetitive tasks, improve measurement accuracy, and detect anomalies more quickly.

Key challenges :

  • Obtaining reliable and consistent SVI readings.

  • Minimising technical interventions on site.

  • Facilitating data access and sharing for operators.

THE MISSION

Deploying a connected and intelligent solution

PEPPS designed a complete system integrating an industrial controller, sensors, a Python backend, and image analysis, with both local access and remote supervision.

The project team (backend developers, instrumentation engineers, and data specialists) worked on seamless component integration and on creating visualisation tools tailored to the client’s needs.

  • Install an automated imaging system for sample capture, including dilution, cleaning, and power supply.

  • Develop a Python backend (Flask) to orchestrate measurement cycles via REST APIs.

  • Deploy image analysis algorithms to detect the sludge interface and calculate the SVI.

  • Set up a dual database architecture (InfluxDB & PostgreSQL) along with a Grafana dashboard for local and cloud-based visualisation.

  • Integrate a web frontend for local access and a cloud mode for remote supervision.
