In partnership with other industrial and technological players, Pepps is working on the development of a connected rolling mill cylinder. The ambition is twofold :

  • to strengthen the performance and reliability of these critical pieces of equipment,
  • to enable the cylinder manufacturer to evolve its offering towards a servitisation model.

The challenge

Anticipating critical failures in rolling mills through data and IoT

In the steel industry, rolling mill cylinders are essential components subjected to extreme mechanical and thermal stress. These repeated loads can lead to critical failures, causing unplanned downtime, unexpected maintenance costs and significant productivity losses.

  • The objective of the project is to connect these critical pieces of equipment, ensure continuous monitoring of their condition, and anticipate anomalies before they escalate into major incidents.

By combining IoT sensors, a cloud platform and advanced data analytics, this R&D project paves the way for a new generation of cylinders capable of anticipating anomalies, optimising lifespan and delivering innovative services to end users beyond the physical product.
